Meet the Lawyers of Stuart & WardThree partners, decades of Colorado trial work.
Stuart & Ward is a small firm by design. The work is done by the lawyers whose names are on the door, not handed off to associates or contractors. Every partner came up through the Colorado State Public Defender's Office and built a practice on what they learned there: how to actually try a case.
Between them, the three partners hold Tier 1 Best Law Firms rankings in Colorado for Criminal Defense (General Practice), Criminal Defense (White Collar), and Personal Injury Litigation (Plaintiffs). All three have been named to Colorado Super Lawyers. What that translates to in practice is a firm where the lawyer who answers your call is the lawyer who will be in the courtroom.

Every lawyer at Stuart & Ward came up the same way and brings the same approach to the work. That consistency is what holds the firm together across criminal defense and civil litigation.
Former State Public Defenders
Every attorney at the firm began at the Colorado State Public Defender's Office. That courtroom apprenticeship is how we learned to defend, and prosecute, cases the right way.

Working With Stuart & Ward
Are consultations actually free?
Yes. Initial consultations with Stuart & Ward are free and confidential, with no obligation. We use that meeting to understand your situation, give you a candid assessment, and explain how we would approach the matter if you hired us. You leave with information either way.
Can I choose which partner handles my case?
You can. In practice, the partner you meet with often becomes the partner on your case, and we frequently make introductions based on the specific issue. Martin Stuart's practice focuses on serious criminal allegations, Tom Ward handles criminal and civil matters with a white-collar emphasis, and Josh Amos's practice is built around trial litigation. We match you with the right lawyer rather than the next available one.
How do fees work at Stuart & Ward?
Fees vary by case type and complexity. Criminal matters are typically handled on a flat fee or hourly basis, set after we understand the charges and the work involved. Civil litigation fees are discussed at the consultation. Either way, you will know clearly how fees work for your specific matter before you decide to retain us.
Do you handle cases outside Denver?
Yes. Although our office is in Denver, we regularly appear in courts across Colorado, including the Front Range, the Western Slope, and federal court. Our attorneys are admitted in both Colorado state and federal courts.
Who actually works on my case?
One of the partners, from the first call through the last hearing. Stuart & Ward is a small firm by design. There are no associate handoffs, no case managers, and no relay teams. The lawyer you meet at the consultation is the lawyer in court with you.
What is the difference between your criminal defense and civil litigation work?
They are two sides of the same skill set. In criminal defense, we represent people accused by the government, in state and federal court. In civil litigation, we represent plaintiffs who have been harmed by other people, businesses, or government actors, primarily in personal injury and police misconduct matters. Both practices rely on the same courtroom experience and trial preparation.
Where Our Lawyers Practice
Our office is in Denver, but our work follows our clients across Colorado. Stuart & Ward attorneys regularly appear in courts throughout the Front Range and the Western Slope, in both state and federal jurisdictions.
